The Complete Email Marketing Stack Under €30

Giovanni van Dam·

What You're Probably Paying Right Now

Let's start with the uncomfortable numbers.

Mailchimp at 10,000 contacts on the Standard plan: $150/month. Need advanced segmentation and comparative reporting? Upgrade to Premium: $350/month. And they count unsubscribed contacts toward your limit.

Keap (formerly Infusionify): starts at $249/month. Includes CRM features most SMBs never use, but you're paying for them anyway.

HubSpot Marketing Hub: the Professional tier — which is where most real features live — starts at $800/month. The Starter tier at $20/month exists mostly to get you into the ecosystem before the upsell hits.

ActiveCampaign: $79–$187/month depending on contacts and features. More reasonable, but costs add up fast once you exceed 10K contacts.

For an SMB doing $1M–$5M in revenue, spending $200–$800/month on email marketing is common. That's $2,400–$9,600 per year to send emails. Most of that budget goes toward features the team never opens.

What You Actually Need

Strip away the dashboards, the "AI-powered" subject line generators, and the integrations with tools you don't use. Here's what an SMB email marketing stack genuinely requires:

  1. Sending infrastructure — reliable delivery, proper authentication, decent inbox placement
  2. Template builder — create emails without writing HTML, maintain brand consistency
  3. Contact management and segmentation — tag, filter, and group your audience based on behavior and attributes
  4. Automation — trigger-based sequences (welcome series, abandoned cart, re-engagement)
  5. Analytics — open rates, click rates, conversions, unsubscribes. Not 47 dashboards. The metrics that matter.
  6. Compliance — GDPR, CAN-SPAM, unsubscribe handling, consent management

That's it. Six capabilities. Everything else is nice-to-have at best and bloat at worst.

The DIY Approach (And Why It's a Trap)

Some technical founders try to build this themselves. "We'll use Postmark for sending, build our own templates, and store contacts in our database." In theory, this works. In practice:

  • Postmark: ~$15/month for 10K emails. Great deliverability, but it's just sending. No templates, no automation, no analytics dashboard.
  • Amazon SES: $0.10 per 1,000 emails. Cheapest option, but you're building everything else from scratch.
  • Custom code: Template builder, segmentation engine, automation logic, analytics pipeline, unsubscribe handling, bounce processing. That's 3–6 months of engineering time.

Total cost of DIY: $15–$50/month in infrastructure + $30K–$80K in development time (or equivalent hours from your own engineering team). You save on the subscription and pay triple in engineering time.

Unless email marketing is your core product — which for most SMBs it isn't — building it yourself is a bad trade.

The ZenSendr Alternative

Here's what you get at €29/month:

Sending Infrastructure

Built on a modern delivery stack with proper SPF, DKIM, and DMARC configuration handled during onboarding. We walk through authentication setup in under 10 minutes. Domain warm-up is automated — we ramp your sending volume over four weeks so your reputation builds correctly.

Dedicated IP available on higher tiers, shared IP pools managed for reputation on the base tier.

Template Builder

Drag-and-drop editor that produces clean, responsive HTML. No coding required. Import your brand colors and logo once, and every template inherits them.

We also support raw HTML for teams that want full control. Paste your code, preview across devices, send.

Segmentation

Tag contacts based on behavior (opened email X, clicked link Y, purchased product Z), attributes (location, signup date, plan tier), or custom properties you define.

Build segments with simple rules: "Contacts who opened the last 3 campaigns AND are on the Team plan AND signed up more than 30 days ago." That's three clicks, not a SQL query.

Automation

Visual automation builder for trigger-based sequences:

  • Welcome series — new subscriber gets emails 1, 3, and 7 days after signup
  • Re-engagement — no opens in 60 days triggers a "still interested?" sequence
  • Behavior triggers — clicked pricing page? Send the comparison guide. Downloaded the whitepaper? Follow up with a case study.
  • Date-based — renewal reminders, birthday emails, anniversary campaigns

Each automation includes branching logic (if opened, send A; if not, send B) and wait steps. No code required.

Analytics

One dashboard with the numbers that matter:

  • Delivery rate — are your emails reaching the server?
  • Inbox placement — are they landing in the inbox or spam?
  • Open rate — are people reading them?
  • Click rate — are they engaging?
  • Conversion tracking — are they taking the action you wanted?
  • Unsubscribe rate — are you losing audience?

No vanity metrics. No "engagement score" calculated from a black box algorithm. Just the data you need to decide what's working and what isn't.

Compliance Built In

  • One-click unsubscribe in every email (List-Unsubscribe header included automatically)
  • GDPR consent tracking with audit trail
  • Automatic suppression of bounced and unsubscribed addresses
  • CAN-SPAM compliant footer inserted by default

The Honest Comparison

Here's how the numbers stack up for a typical SMB with 10,000 contacts:

HubSpot Starter looks cheap until you realize 10,000 contacts pushes you into the Professional tier at $800/month. Mailchimp is solid but charges premium prices for AI features that are middling at best.

Who ZenSendr Is NOT For

Transparency matters more than closing every sale. ZenSendr isn't the right fit if:

  • You need deep CRM integration. If your entire sales process runs through Salesforce or HubSpot CRM, you want email marketing that lives inside that ecosystem. We integrate via API and webhooks, but it's not native.
  • You send more than 500K emails/month. Our infrastructure handles it, but at that volume you're likely an enterprise with enterprise needs — dedicated account management, custom SLAs, advanced deliverability consulting. That's not our model.
  • You need complex multi-brand management. Sending from 10 different brands with separate templates, compliance rules, and analytics? Tools like Braze or Iterable are built for that. We're built for one brand doing email well.
  • You already have a working setup. If your current tool works, you're within budget, and your team knows how to use it — switching has real costs. Don't switch just because we're cheaper. Switch if your current tool is genuinely failing you.

The Math

For an SMB spending $200/month on Mailchimp (the most common setup we see), switching to ZenSendr saves roughly $170/month. That's $2,040/year.

Not life-changing money. But it's money that could go toward ad spend, a better sales tool, or — and this is the real point — not paying a premium for capabilities you already have at a lower price.

Email marketing shouldn't cost more than your team's lunch. At €29/month, it doesn't have to.
